The Story So Far This Football Season — Brett Favre
The story of the year, so far, has to be the return of Brett Favre to the NFL. For years he was the cornerstone of the Green Bay Packers. The rough, tough Packers who play their home games on a field nicknamed “The Frozen Tundra”.
Brett has been a Super Bowl champion, a league MVP and the holder of many records. It had been quite a career when he called it quits in March of 2008. It was a very tearful goodbye and Packer fans wept along with Brett.
Then, as spring moved towards summer, Brett got the itch again. He was still the property of the Packers but they had moved on with backup, now starter, Aaron Rogers. It was time for a new era.
As the ESPY Awards grew closer on ESPN, the speculation that Brett wanted to return reached a fever pitch. Justin Timberlake, the award’s show host, made many references to his return. Then ESPN became the Favre Network. Everything he did made SportsCenter.
After training camps opened, Brett made it clear that he wanted to play football once again. He had many long meetings with Packer officials and coaches. Eventually, they decided to trade him to the New York Jets. Brett was headed to the bright lights of the big city.
This caused a rumble throughout the league as the Jets released their former starting quarterback, Chad Pennington. It did not take long for the Dolphins to sign Pennington, although it was rumored that 6 teams wanted him.
Some of you might remember when Brett played himself in the movie “There’s Something About Mary”. It was more than a cameo and he played himself quite well. I’m sure, if he wanted, there could have been other movies in his future but for now, we’ll take this one.
So, the famed number 4 jersey has been dusted off, if it had any time to collect any dust. The only difference now is the yellow is gone and it’s just green and white. We’ll see if there’s any magic left in that 38 year old arm.
He should have never taken the number 4 if he was going to play for the Jets. I have watched him since day one and now I look forward to watching Aaron Rodgers. I think it is more than just the football there though. LOL
